Newborn Session Tips for New Mamas: What to Expect & How to Prepare
by Amanda AnnO’lene Photography – Newborn Photography in Artesia, NM
First of all, congratulations on your new little love (or soon-to-be arrival)! If you're reading this, you're likely preparing for a newborn session or thinking about booking one—and I’m so glad you’re here.
As a mama myself and a photographer who specializes in newborn photography in Artesia, NM, I know how quickly those first days fly by. The sleepy smiles, the flaky skin, the tiniest fingers and toes—they change faster than we expect. That’s why these sessions are so special. They freeze time in the most beautiful way.
But I also know that getting out of the house with a brand-new baby can feel like a lot. That’s why I’ve created this guide—to help you feel calm, prepared, and excited for your session.
1. When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
It’s a good idea to get in touch before your baby arrives so we can pencil you in around your estimated due date. Once your little one is here, we’ll set a firm session date. Booking 1 to 3 months in advance also gives us time for any special planning—whether that’s ordering custom items, selecting meaningful props, or making sure everything is just right for your baby’s first portraits.
The sweet spot for in-studio newborn photos is typically when baby is between 5 and 14 days old. At this stage, they're still extra sleepy and love being curled up, which makes it easier to capture those cozy, womb-like poses.
That said—every baby is different, and older newborns (even up to a month old like sweet Bransyn, who recently came in!) can still absolutely have a beautiful session. I build in extra time and take a more relaxed approach when needed.
2. What to Bring (and What You Can Leave Behind!)
You don’t need to bring much—I’ve got you covered on props, wraps, blankets, and outfits. But a few items from home can help things go smoothly:
-
Diapers & wipes
-
Bottle or pacifier if your baby takes one
-
Extra onesie or swaddle
-
Snack or drink for yourself (you deserve it!)
No need to worry about baby acne, flaky skin, or little scratches—I gently retouch images to preserve the beauty of these fleeting details while keeping your baby’s natural charm intact.
3. Helping Baby Stay Happy & Sleepy
The magic of newborn photography lies in those peaceful, snuggly moments. A few things you can do beforehand can help set the stage:
-
Try to keep baby awake for about 30–60 minutes before the session
-
Feed right before arrival or at the start of the session
-
Dress baby in a loose onesie for an easy transition
-
Don’t stress if baby cries or needs breaks—I follow their lead every step of the way
My studio is kept warm and cozy, and I use soft noise and gentle transitions to help your little one settle in.
4. What Should Parents Wear?
This part is easier than you think! Simple is best.
For moms, soft neutrals or earth tones photograph beautifully—think flowy dresses, oversized sweaters, or comfy tops. Dads look great in plain tees or button-downs in warm, muted tones.
If siblings are joining, I’ll help coordinate everyone so the final images feel timeless and cohesive.
(And yes—you’ll want to be in a few photos, even if you don’t feel “camera ready.” One day, your baby will be so grateful they have them.)
5. Safety First—Always
As someone trained in safe newborn posing and wrapping techniques, my top priority is your baby's well-being. Every pose is gentle, never forced, and baby’s comfort always comes first.
You're welcome to stay close by and ask questions throughout the session. This is your baby’s first official photoshoot—and it should feel just as safe and nurturing as your arms.
6. Trust the Process
Newborn sessions are not rushed. They typically last 1.5 to 3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeds, changes, and snuggles.
Every baby is different. Some settle quickly, others need more breaks. Either way, I promise—we’ll get those beautiful images you’re dreaming of.
Final Thoughts
This is such a special chapter of your life—messy, beautiful, emotional, and fleeting. Thank you for considering me to document it.
